The Sniper

The Tribalman's Shiv is a community-made melee weapon for the Sniper. It appears as a stylized kukri[1] composed of reddish wood with a curved edge in front and a serrated edge on its broad side.

The weapon deals 50% less damage than the Kukri, but causes the opponent to bleed and lose health for 6 seconds. Because of the reduced initial damage, direct contact with the opponent is not advised — the user should instead perform hit and run tactics to take down encroaching enemies like Spies that Cloak when attacked. Its critical hit animation is identical to that of the Kukri — a double handed overhead swing, similar to the Pyro's normal melee attack and the critical swing of the Eyelander.

The kill icon for the Tribalman's Shiv was contributed by NeoDement.

Design and Concept

The Tribalman's Shiv was designed to be a quick and easy item for creator, New, to put together and submit. The concept drawings for the weapon were done over the course of a few days, while New was in math class. The Shiv itself was designed to be made of wood to compliment the Huntsman's and Razorback's wood style. Over the course of designing concepts, the Shiv went through several different ideas. One such scrapped idea was a wooden paddle with teeth attached to it. Ultimately, New decided to use the wooden machete design, as it was faster and easier to model. The actual model itself, made in Maya, took around an hour to fully model and texture. While creating the texture, New found that wood in Team Fortress 2's style is bland and boring, and to add contrast and show where the sharp areas of the weapon were, he made the edges bright orange. The notches on the weapon were originally suppose to have rope tied around them, but this idea did not pan out.

The Tribalman's Shiv was never tested by New in-game. He struggled to get the model imported into the Source engine, and ultimately ended up submitting the weapon without ever importing it into the game. The weapon itself was submitted under the simple name of "Wooden Machete," which is still reflected in the model's name. New actually thought the model was so bad, he deleted the original files, making any revisions impossible. He also wanted the Sniper, when striking with a critical hit, to flip the weapon around to bludgeon enemies to death with the notches on the weapon, but he could not figure out how to make and submit custom animations.

Overall the process took a little over 7 hours from design to submission. [1]

Bugs

  • It is possible to earn the achievement "Dead Reckoning" with this weapon if an enemy bleeds to death after the Sniper dies.
  • The Tribalman's Shiv is pictured upside down on its kill icon. This is probably because before the September 30, 2010 patch the Sniper used to hold the weapon in reverse, using the serrated side to attack. The original kill icon creator has submitted a fix to Valve.
