The Sniper

The Tribalman's Shiv is a community-made melee weapon for the Sniper. It appears as a stylized Template:W[1] composed of reddish wood with a curved edge in front and a serrated edge on its broad side.

The weapon deals 50% less damage than the Kukri, but causes the opponent to bleed and lose health for 6 seconds. Because of the reduced initial damage, direct contact with the opponent is not advised — the user should instead perform hit and run tactics to take down encroaching enemies like Spies that Cloak when attacked. Its critical hit animation is identical to that of the Kukri — a double handed overhead swing, similar to the Pyro's normal melee attack and the critical swing of the Eyelander.

The kill icon for the Tribalman's Shiv was contributed by NeoDement.

Trivia

  • The Tribalman's Shiv is made entirely of wood. Since several plants from tropical areas possess anticoagulant, or blood-thinning, properties, it has been theorized that the blade may be carved from the wood of one of these plants, such as a Template:W, and would account for it inflicting a profusely-bleeding wound. This would be intentional on Valve's part though, as the creator of the Shiv did not think of this but admitted it was logical and cool.
  • Originally, the creator of the Shiv intended to make the viewmodel as it is now, but on a critical hit the knife would be turned so that the serrated edge would strike the enemy. This required custom animations which neither the creator nor Valve were willing to make. As a result, the animation was never implemented.[1]
  • The Tribalman's Shiv took approximately 7 and a half hours to make, from formulating the idea to submitting it.
