I don't usually kill morons this fast.
The Scout

The Shortstop is a craftable primary weapon for the Scout class. It appears as a four-barreled Pistol, similar to a peppergun.

This weapon is a Pistol which is loaded with Shotgun-like ammunition. Each shot fires multiple pellets from a single chamber. The Shortstop does not possess the increased damage ramp-up of the Scout's other primaries, the Scattergun and Force-A-Nature, but each shot has little bullet spread, making this an ideal weapon to use where range and accuracy are a concern.

Each shot fires 60% fewer pellets than the Scattergun, but each pellet deals twice the damage, resulting in an overall 20% lower base damage per shot. The Shortstop has a firing speed approximately 78% faster than the Scattergun and reloads an entire clip of ammunition rapidly, although each clip has four shots as opposed to six.

Like the standard Shotgun and Scattergun, the Shortstop's first shell fires at least one pellet straight down the crosshair before 'bullet-spread' takes effect. When random spread is disabled any shots with the Shortstop form a T-shape consisting of the centre row and bottom centre position of a 3x3 square.

Previous changes

October 6, 2010 Patch

  • The Shortstop is now affected by tf_use_fixed_weaponspreads.

December 17, 2010 Patch

  • Shortstop was originally intended to have a Slowdown effect, similar to Natascha. However, the effect never functioned properly, and was eventually removed altogether.

Bugs

  • Occasionally, after reloading the Shortstop, the pellets clip through the bottom of the weapon. This clipping can occur when Auto-Reload is enabled in the options, or when the user holds down the reload key while firing.
  • Currently, it does not glow when the player is Crit boosted. However, the Crit electricity can still be seen.

Trivia

  • The weapon's name is a reference to "Template:W", the fielding position between second and third base in the Scout's favorite sport, baseball.
  • The design of the Shortstop is seemingly a combination of the Template:W and four-barreled Template:W.
  • A pepperbox pistol or 'pepper gun' is any small handgun or pistol with multiple barrels fixed around a center axis.
  • The Shortstop was originally intended to be a replacement for the Pistol, and shares many traits with the Pistol as a result.
    • Taunting with the Shortstop performs the Pistol taunt instead of the typical taunt for the Scattergun or Force-A-Nature.
    • This weapon delivers Critical hits in the same fashion as the Pistol and other rapid-fire weapons.
    • This weapon shares its ammunition reserves with the Pistol when both are equipped.
