Bonk! is fulla radiation, which as we all know is pretty great for givin' people superpowers.
— The Bonk! Atomic Punch publicity blurb

The Bonk! Atomic Punch is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Scout class. It is a small energy drink can with a team-appropriate label; RED's flavor of Bonk! is "Cherry Fission", while BLU's is "Blutonium Berry".

Upon drinking, this weapon provides temporary invincibility to the player from any type of damage, bar environmental and telefragging. The player's view is forced into third-person mode upon drinking, during which they can maneuver and jump as they see fit, but will be unable to use any weapons. When any type of bullet or projectile hits a Scout under the drink's effects, a "Miss!" signal will appear above the class's head followed by one of many responses. The Scout has unlimited Bonk! cans at his disposal, but cannot take out another can until his regeneration period, shown in the HUD, is over.

Sentry Guns will not damage a Scout under the influence of Bonk!, but he will still experience knockback. If a Scout is set on fire while he drinks Bonk!, he will not take damage from further Flamethrower attacks or from afterburn, but will resume being damaged by the flames should they persist after the drink wears off. It is possible to be soaked with Jarate while under the effect of Bonk!, but it will only affect the damage taken after Bonk!'s effects have worn off. Bonk! cannot be used while carrying the intelligence, nor can a Scout grab the intelligence under the effect of Bonk!. Scouts under the effect of Bonk! cannot capture or defend objectives such as control points or the Payload cart. The effect of Bonk! will cease if a Scout using it activates a Resupply locker.

While drinking, being hit by the Natascha, the Flamethrower's compression blast, the Force-A-Nature and being launched in the air by explosives will interrupt the drinking process. This cancels the use, but still counts as consumption, and drains the recharge meter as such.

The Bonk! Atomic Punch is automatically given to any player who obtains 22 Scout achievements.

Bugs

  • Performing an Action taunt while holding the Bonk! Atomic Punch will drain the recharge meter.
  • On-hit effects, such as the Black Box and hitting the Scout if he is covered in Mad Milk trigger the on-hit effects as any normal attack would.
  • While on a Payload map, touching the attacker's exit gate at the moment the round begins while the invulnerability effect of Bonk! Atomic Punch is active will cause the Scout to remain invulnerable until the player touches a Resupply locker.
  • The effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch will not protect the player from the damaging fires of torches on Egypt, or most other environmental hazards as one would expect. This may or may not be intended.
  • If the player uses the console commands kill, or explode to commit suicide while under the effects Bonk! Atomic Punch, the kill will be awarded to the last player on the enemy team to have dealt damage the Scout with a weapon, even if the Scout was invulnerable at the time the damage was taken.
  • Should a player consume Bonk! Atomic Punch immediately upon touching a Resupply locker, they will be granted an additional Bonk! Atomic Punch, shown by the ammo counter. This extra drink can be consumed as soon as the first Bonk! Atomic Punch effects wear off.
  • If a player consumes the Bonk! Atomic Punch and is pushed off any size ledge, the Bonk! Atomic Punch bar will deplete completely, and the invulnerability effect will not occur.
  • Should a Scout under the effects of the Bonk! Atomic Punch fall from a sufficient height, the fall damage sound will play despite no damage being delivered.
  • A Scout under the effects of Bonk! Atomic Punch is still able to perform the Home Run taunt by pressing the taunt key immediately after consuming.

Trivia

  • An active adult's daily recommended sugar intake is around 90 grams. Assuming the contents of Bonk! Atomic Punch are as advertised, the drink would have to contain several hundred times worth of daily recommended sugar, weighing at least 9 kg. This would equate roughly to 20 lbs.
  • The texture used for the Bonk! Atomic Punch was reused for with the Bonk Helm, a headgear for the Scout, which is based on novelty drinking helmets.
  • The Bonk! Atomic Punch and Crit-a-Cola are listed with ingredients including water, radiation, and sugar. Upon closer inspection, the ingredients label reads as follows:
INGREDIENTS: WATER, RADIATION, SUGAR
AS]]ha a kl ]wdlwa kladjal ka[ kl] Aa[ kl]a das]k]dklas] kjda] Qs ldk]lakl] wk] da

  • Bonk's advertising slogan about its radiation content giving its drinker superpowers was referenced again during the Über Update, where the Scout appeared under the Bonk logo dressed like DC superhero, The Flash, who, like the Scout, is famous for his speed.[1]
