'Kaboom', indeed, you drunken wretch!

The Ullapool Caber is a melee weapon for the Demoman. It appears as a World War II-era German Template:W Stielhandgranate "potato masher" grenade, with the Mann Co. logo stamped on the head.

The first hit on any solid object or enemy will cause the Scottish explosives in the head to detonate, dealing massive explosive damage to both the Demoman and surrounding enemies. The Demoman will be propelled directly upwards and likely suffer fall damage upon landing. After the Caber explodes, the Demoman will be left with only the grenade stick, which deals significantly less damage than other melee weapons. Respawning or visiting a Resupply Locker are the only ways to restore the grenade to its original state. Both the melee and explosive damage never randomly deal critical hits, but can still be forced to do so through the use of the Chargin’ Targe or Kritzkrieg.

The grenade will not explode if it hits an ally, air or a friendly building.

Note: The second blueprint simply makes a Demoman's melee weapon; there is still a chance of getting the Eyelander, Scotsman's Skullcutter, Pain Train, Claidheamh Mòr, or Half-Zatoichi instead. There will be approximately a 16.67% chance of crafting this item using the second blueprint.

Bugs

  • The Ullapool Caber currently has a visual bug in which it sometimes appears detonated when it is not.
  • When striking an enemy, the Ullapool Caber sometimes does not deliver the explosion damage. It still deals full explosion damage to the Demoman, but it only deals melee damage to the struck enemy. The Caber appears broken after such an event has occurred, but striking an object, wall, or enemy again causes a second explosion even without returning to a spawn cabinet.
  • The weapon does not currently mini-crit when used with the Chargin' Targe.
  • Striking an ally with the weapon while friendly fire is enabled will not set it off.
  • Sometimes the weapon will appear invisible in the Demoman's hand in world view.
  • The Ullapool Caber currently uses the default Bottle animations and sound, meaning that the impact sound is the exact same as the Bottle. Additionally, the Demoman will refer to his bottle of scrumpy upon a kill.

Trivia

  • Template:W is the town from the Ross and Cromarty area in the Scottish Highlands where the Demoman was born.
  • A caber is a long wooden pole (usually a section from the trunk of a tree) that is thrown as a feat of strength during the Template:W event of the Scottish Highland Games.
  • Hitting an ally with the Ullapool Caber does not set it off. Hitting a disguised Spy however, does detonate the Ullapool Caber.
  • The description "High-yield Scottish face removal" was taken directly from the promotional artwork that Swizzle created for his entry in the Polycount contest.
  • It is possible to negate the self-damage of the Ullapool Caber's explosion by equipping the Sticky Jumper. This does not negate the self damage in Medieval Mode, as the Sticky Jumper is stripped from the player during play.
  • Damage from the Ullapool Caber is spread across two rounds in quick succession. Melee damage is first dealt when the grenade hits the opponent while explosive damage is dealt as the grenade detonates. Therefore, if an attacked target has very little health, it will display the killicon associated with the Caber's melee damage, not explosion damage.
