Sandvich make me strong!
The Heavy on the benefits of protein

The Buffalo Steak Sandvich is a community-made secondary weapon for the Heavy. It is simply a slab of raw rib-eyed steak, supposedly from a Template:W.

When eaten with primary fire, the weapon heals no damage to the Heavy, but bestows a multitude of buffs: move speed is increased to 311 HU/s — roughly 35% faster than the Heavy's normal walking speed — damage dealt and damage taken are delivered as Mini-crits, and the player is restricted to using melee weapons for the duration of the buffs. The buffs last for a total of 15 seconds, and the weapon itself takes 4.3 seconds to consume. In the same way as the Sandvich, when eaten the player will be forced into the third-person view as the Heavy stops and makes a loud munching noise whilst eating.

Should the player use secondary fire, the item will be thrown to the ground and functions as a pickup similar to the Sandvich, providing health upon being picked up. The primary fire effects are not applied on dropped Steaks. Should the Heavy be killed whilst holding the Buffalo Steak Sandvich, it will be dropped as a collectible for 50 Health — 75 for a Scout.

Bugs

  • It is possible to get the achievement Retire the Runner by killing a Heavy under the effects of the Buffalo Steak Sandvich, possibly due to the Steak having similar effects to Crit-a-Cola.
  • Despite the Buffalo Steak Sandvich not healing any health, using it while having anything less than full health will cause the 30 second cooldown to be triggered due to shared coding with the regular Sandvich. As no such cooldown will occur when used at full health, it is recommended that one consumes the Buffalo Steak Sandvich only while at full health so that it may consumed immediately again on expiration of the effect without the additional 10 second wait.
  • The Axtinguisher will only mini-crit a Heavy who is under the effects of the Buffalo Steak Sandvich regardless if he is on fire or not.
  • When eating the Buffalo Steak Sandvich, no bite marks will appear visible for the player, yet other players may see a bite mark form. On occasion, the Steak Sandvich will glitch and show a first person view of a bitten Steak Sandvich.
  • Rarely, when visiting a closet, the mini-crit effect will deactivate, but you will still be unable to use any weapons other than melee until it's original effect wears off.
  • When in game modes like Arena, taunting with the Buffalo Steak Sandvich will proceed with eating it, but will not give the effect. Yet will still give it a cooldown.

Trivia

  • The Peyote Cactus was originally intended to go with the Hibernating Bear set instead of the Buffalo Steak Sandvich. However, play-testers thought that people might find a man in a Native American Head Dress eating Template:W and going on a rage-induced killing spree offensive. The Steak was therefore created as a quick replacement.[1]
