If I have to crack some skulls, I will.
The Soldier

The Shovel is the default melee weapon of the Soldier. It appears as a hand-held folding shovel, also known as an Template:W or spade with a splintered handle.

Dealing significant damage, the Shovel is a good alternative to the Shotgun when an opponent is too close to safely use the Rocket Launcher. For its critical hit animation, the Soldier swings it from the left in a backhand motion.

Update history

April 29, 2008 Patch (Gold Rush Update)

  • Added new swing animations.

February 14, 2011 Patch

  • Fixed melee attacks not destroying remote detonation pipes (Stickybombs).

Trivia

  • The critical hit animation is the same manner of attack the Soldier uses to take out the Spy in Meet the Soldier.
  • The tool's real-life counterpart is the US M-1943 entrenching tool.
  • According to the Mac update comic (not actual gameplay and non-canon), the Soldier's Shovel is highly flammable and will spontaneously catch fire, and can barely dig holes because it is made by Mann Co.
