The Sandvich is a great tool for a Heavy defending an area, as it gives him the ability to replenish health between enemy waves without having to abandon his post.
Sandvich publicity blurb

The Sandvich, known in full as the Sandvich Edible Device, is an unlockable secondary weapon for the Heavy. It is half of a sandwich, consisting of two triangular slices of bread containing lettuce, tomatoes, Swiss cheese and an indeterminate meat referred to as both ham and bologna by the Heavy. Topping it is a green stuffed olive pinned to the Sandvich by a toothpick.

The Sandvich can be consumed by pressing either the bound primary fire or taunt key. When eaten, it will replenish 100% health, 300 HP, over a four second duration. During this time, the player will be forced into the third-person view as the Heavy stops and makes a loud munching noise while eating. Heavies are allowed to constantly eat a Sandvich without a cooldown if they have full health. As eating the Sandvich is considered a taunt, it cannot be consumed while underwater. When eaten, critical Sandviches deliver no additional benefits.

Players can use their alternate fire key to drop the Sandvich onto the floor to act as a medium-sized health kit. It will appear as a rotating plate bearing a normal Sandvich. It can then be picked up by teammates or enemy players, healing the collector by 50% of their maximum health. The Heavy may also retrieve it themselves if healing a smaller amount quickly is more advantageous than stopping to eat it normally for the larger health benefit. The dropped Sandvich only appears for 30 seconds, until another Sandvich is dropped by the same Heavy, or until it is retrieved by a player, which can include the Heavy who dropped it. Only a dropped Sandvich will extinguish fire.

The recharge time for the Sandvich is about 30 seconds, unless one is collected from a Resupply cabinet or a Medkit while at full health. The timer begins as soon as the item is consumed or dropped. Should the Heavy be killed while holding the Sandvich, it will be dropped as a collectible for 50 health, or 75 for a Scout.

The Sandvich is automatically awarded to any player who obtains 10 Heavy achievements.

It is currently having a change tested in the Team Fortress 2 Beta, as of the January 27, 2012 Patch (Beta). This change causes dropped Sandviches to not heal damage done if picked up by the Heavy who dropped it. Instead it refills his food meter.

  • While at full health, picking up dropped medkits from slain players, either in Medieval Mode or from those killed by the Candy Cane, will not restore the Sandvich.
  • With the Sandvich active during humiliation, it can still be thrown with the alt-fire button.
  • When scared by the ghosts on Harvest Event and Eyeaduct, taunting with the Sandvich while damaged will not heal you, though the cooldown timer will reset.

Trivia

TF Industries' Sandvich Edible Device user manual
  • S.E.D, the acronym of "Sandvich Edible Device", is also the acronym for the Template:W, the Communist governing party of East Germany from October 1949 to March 1990.
  • The Sandvich was first introduced to the community in Meet the Scout, months before it was released as an in-game item.
  • The user guide for the Sandvich contains a typo. The word "Health" relating to the cheese and dairy group is misspelled. This is corrected in the actual poster available through the Valve Store.
