If I have to crack some skulls, I will.
The Soldier

The Shovel is the default melee weapon of the Soldier. It appears as a hand-held folding shovel, also known as an Template:W or spade, with a splintered handle.

Dealing significant damage, the Shovel is a good alternative to the Shotgun when an opponent is too close to safely use the Rocket Launcher. For its critical hit animation, the Soldier swings it from the left in a backhand motion.

Update history

April 29, 2008 Patch (Gold Rush Update)

  • Added new swing animations.

February 14, 2011 Patch

  • Fixed melee attacks not destroying remote detonation pipes (Stickybombs).

Bugs

  • Upon drawing this weapon, the top of the Shovel will flip like rubber before standing up straight once the draw animation is completed.

Trivia

  • The critical hit animation is the same manner of attack the Soldier uses to take out the Spy in Meet the Soldier.
  • The tool's real-life counterpart is the U.S. Army M-1943 entrenching tool.
  • According to the Mac Update comic (not actual gameplay and considered non-canon), the Soldier's Shovel is highly flammable, will spontaneously catch fire, and can barely dig holes due to it being a Mann Co. product.
    • However, Mann Co. products catching fire is canon, since their flammability is mentioned again in the Mann-Conomy Update comic.
