* The Ullapool Caber currently has a visual bug in which it sometimes appears detonated when it is not. This can happen when hitting friendly buildings or [[Resupply]] doors as they open. Latest revision as of 04:27, 2 April 2024

There's a long tradition of brave, kilted men running into battle with naught but a large stick and dangerous amounts of alcohol in their bloodstreams. Now you can keep this glorious custom alive and add a modern twist by attaching explosives to your improvised weaponry!
Ullapool Caber publicity blurb

The Ullapool Caber, also known as simply Caber, is a community-created melee weapon for the Demoman. It is a stick hand grenade, with a white Mann Co. logo stamped on the head and black wrapping tape around the stick.

With this weapon, the first hit on any solid object or enemy (including a disguised Spy) causes the explosives in the head to detonate, dealing explosive damage to both the Demoman and surrounding enemies, with rampup applied, and melee damage dealt to the main target in addition to the explosion. The Demoman is propelled directly upwards by the explosion, likely suffering fall damage upon landing. This weapon does not explode if struck against allies or friendly buildings.

After the Caber explodes, the Demoman is left with only the remains of the grenade stick, which deals less damage and has a slower attack speed than other Demoman melee weapons. Respawning or visiting a Resupply locker are the only ways to restore the grenade to its original state. This weapon deploys 100% slower, has a 20% less firing speed penalty, and a hidden 15% damage penalty.

While holding the Caber, any sort of damage caused by the Caber automatically causes the Demoman to voice "Ka-boooom!", "Kablooie!", or "And that's what ya' get for touching that!". This includes the detonation of the weapon itself.

The kill icons for the Ullapool Caber were contributed by Psyke .

Bugs

  • The Ullapool Caber may sometimes appear detonated when it is not. This can occur after hitting a friendly building, a Pumpkin bomb, the JACK, an enemy, or the Resupply doors as they open. It sometimes does not deliver the explosive damage to the enemy, but still deals full explosion damage to the user. Additionally, switching to another weapon after detonating the Ullapool Caber may result in it appearing undetonated.
  • The weapon does not mini-crit when used with the Demoman shields.
  • While explosive jumping with the Ullapool Caber as the active weapon, the Demoman says voice lines which should normally be played when scoring an explosive hit.
  • Taunting with any action taunts that use props (Shred Alert, for example) while using the Ullapool Caber causes the taunt to use the Ullapool Caber instead.

Trivia

  • Ullapool is a town in the Ross and Cromarty area in the Scottish Highlands where the Demoman was born.
  • A caber is a long wooden pole (usually a section from the trunk of a tree) that is thrown as a feat of strength during the caber toss event of the Scottish Highland Games.
  • The description "High-yield Scottish face removal" was taken directly from the promotional artwork that Swizzle created for his entry in the Polycount contest.
  • The taunt used for the Ullapool Caber was present in game files and unused since the WAR! Update. This taunt was originally for the Bottle.
