Say you have two things: a perfectly good hand, and a brilliant inventor for a grandfather. One day you stumble across a blueprint for an amazing-as-hell robot hand meant to replace an arm-stump. Wait, you have three things: the hand, the grandfather, and a saw.
— Blog post highlighting the Gunslinger

The Gunslinger is an unlockable melee weapon for the Engineer. It is a robotic prosthetic hand which replaces the Engineer's right hand.

The Gunslinger grants the Engineer an additional of 25 maximum health (raising his total health to 150), at the cost of disabling random critical hits with the weapon. However, the player is able to perform a three-part combo attack on enemies. Should the player score 3 melee hits in succession, without releasing the attack key, the third punch (a swift downward motion with a clenched fist) scores a guaranteed critical hit. Any missed punch or release of the attack key resets the combo. However, as long as there is no miss and no pause in the attacks, whether all three punches hit the same target, two different targets, or three different targets, the third hit scores a guaranteed critical hit on whichever enemy player is hit.

Even though this weapon does not deal random critical hits, the Gunslinger can be crit boosted by regular means; but being a body location, it does not glow when crit boosted. Similiarly to the Fists, the fingers only show sparks to indicate the crit boost.

Using the Gunslinger replaces the Engineer's standard Sentry Gun with a Combat Mini-Sentry Gun. The Mini-Sentry builds, rotates, and fires much faster than the standard Sentry Gun; however, it cannot be upgraded, and each shot deals lower damage compared to that of a standard Level 1 Sentry Gun. The gibs from a destroyed Combat Mini-Sentry Gun do not grant the Engineer any metal when picked up.

Switching to a different melee weapon destroys the Combat Mini-Sentry Gun, if it is built. Similarly, switching to the Gunslinger from a different melee weapon will cause the original Sentry Gun to be destoryed, if built, regaurdless of upgrade progress.

Taunting with the Gunslinger equipped performs the Organ Grinder kill taunt.

The Gunslinger is automatically given to any player who obtains 11 Engineer achievements.

Unused content

  • The Engineer model has an attachment point named "exhaust" which is located where the exhaust port for the Gunslinger is. At one point, the Gunslinger may have have been planned to give off exhaust particles.

Bugs

An Engineer holding both the Southern Hospitality and the Gunslinger at once.
  • Weapon switching glitches can occur with the Gunslinger and any Wrench, which creates a glitched client view model of the Gunslinger holding the selected Wrench at the same time (which should be impossible as they are both melee weapons, and thus could not be used together). It is also possible for the Gunslinger to appear as the Engineer's default glove.
  • The right-hand gib of the gibbed Gunslinger-wearing Engineer will still show his regular glove.
  • If an ÜberCharge is deployed on the Engineer using the Gunslinger, it will show a wrong skin position of the invulnerable Engineer.
  • If connection to the item server is lost while equipped with the Gunslinger, the Engineer's right arm will be invisible on all weapons.
  • Occasionally, the Gunslinger will not load in-game and the melee weapon slot goes missing. This glitch can be fixed by switching to a wrench of any kind.
  • If the player has the Short Circuit and the Gunslinger both equipped, the two items may sometimes glitch and show a distorted Engineer hand when first deployed.

Trivia

Radigan Conagher wielding the Gunslinger.
  • The critical hit animation for the Gunslinger is a punch being swung downward. After playing the critical hit animation, and if left idle, the Gunslinger will jerk and produce a mechanical twitching noise, before resuming the normal idle animation. This is only a visual effect.
  • The Gunslinger, along with the Frontier Justice, Wrangler, and Southern Hospitality, appear to have been designed by Radigan Conagher, the Engineer's grandfather. This is shown by a hidden link in the Engineer Update.
  • The Gunslinger shares traits with the P.D.Q., an Engineer weapon from the closed beta. Both items share the ability to construct non-upgradable Sentry Guns in a shorter time span than normal. In contrast, the Gunslinger's 4x construction rate for the Mini-Sentry beats the P.D.Q.'s 1.5x construction rate for all buildings.
  • The term "gunslinger" is used to refer to a person, commonly in the American Old West, who was dangerous and skilled with a gun.
  • The concept of a robot arm item was added based on community feedback of the background blueprints in the Engineer Update teaser trailer[1].
  • A promotional advertisement featured for Brütal Legend shows The Gunslinger second to the left.
