This article is about the stock primary or secondary weapon shared by the Soldier, Pyro, Heavy, and Engineer. For other shotguns, see Shotgun (disambiguation).

The Shotgun is the default secondary weapon for the Soldier, Pyro, and Heavy, and the default primary weapon for the Engineer. It is a pump-action, sawed-off shotgun.

The Shotgun fires 10 pellets per shot for a total of up to 90 damage at point-blank range, enough to kill every class but the Soldier and the Heavy in two hits. However, it has damage falloff over distance and a wide spread, making it weak in long-range firefights.

Usage and strategies vary between classes:

  • Soldiers often rely on the Shotgun if they are out of rockets and cannot take the time to reload, when in close-quarters combat where explosions would cause self-damage, or against enemy Pyros who are attempting to airblast their rockets.
  • Pyros may use their Shotgun to engage targets outside the range of their Flamethrower, as a finishing blow on burning targets, or when underwater.
  • Heavies may employ the Shotgun when there is no time to spin up the Minigun, when the Minigun's loud spin-up sounds would interfere with an ambush, or when the Heavy needs to be able to run and jump during combat.
  • As the Engineer's most powerful weapon, it is used primarily for defending buildings from nearby enemies, to Spy-check suspicious players, or to help a Sentry Gun finish off an enemy.

The Shotgun's first shell fires at least one pellet straight down the crosshair before "bullet spread" takes effect. When random bullet spread is disabled, the pellets spread in a fixed three by three grid pattern, with two pellets overlapping in the center of the grid.

Taunting as Pyro with the Shotgun equipped results in the Hadouken kill taunt.
